Euan Macpherson has authored four books: The Trial of Jack the Ripper, City of the Dreadful Night – the strange case of Dr Jekyll and Jack the Ripper, The Last Jacobite Heroine and A Dagger for Catherine Douglas. He has also written for newspapers and magazines including The Scots Magazine, Scottish Field and Highlander. Euan is currently employed as a lecturer in Dundee and Angus College. He holds an Honours degree in English Studies with Scottish Literature from The University of Stirling and a Postgraduate Diploma in Librarianship and Information Studies from Robert Gordon University.Researching his latest book took Euan to Perth in search of the site of Katherine Douglas’s doomed attempt to save the life of King James I. That king was murdered while staying at the city’s Blackfriars Monastery in 1437; Katherine used her arm in a vain attempt to bar the door to the king’s chamber, leading to her enduring nickname, ‘Kate Barlass.’ The site of the tragedy is very inadequately marked and there is no known memorial to the heroine, or, for that matter, to the king himself. These are just two figures from our past who were significant men and women in their time, but who are largely forgotten today. In this talk, Euan will examine the stories of not only these two, but of others who deserve to be better remembered by Scots of our own time.
