Testimonial dinner for the former secretary

Jan 1, 2022

Saturday 30 November saw council members gather in the New Club library to give a testimonial dinner to Gordon Cameron, who retired last year after 30 years as Honorary Treasurer and Honorary Secretary of the society.

Gordon was presented with an engraved silver quaich to mark his retirement, as the chairman paid tribute to his long years in both posts.  Gordon has managed the society’s affairs with exemplary diligence throughout that long period and it is he who has been principally responsible for the strong financial position the society enjoys today.  For much of that time the society was not as active as it is now and it must at times have been a lonely and rather thankless task.

Gordon’s father, the late Joe Cameron preceded him in both roles, having been treasurer since 1955 and treasurer from 1964, until his death in 1990.  However, Gordon’s family connection extends back still further, to the society’s foundation in 1820.  Ever since our foundation, partners in his family law firm of Stuart and Stuart have provided the secretary and treasurer of the society, beginning with Joseph Gordon, the treasurer in 1820.  Gordon remains a member of the society’s council, the sixth consecutive generation of his family to do so, beginning with his great, great, great grandfather Alexander Stuart.

Truly the end of an era.  We wish him and Debbie a long, happy and active retirement.
