There are just a few days left to get your entry in for the competition the Royal Celtic Society has been running for a new musical composition, supported by the Glasgow Celtic Society and the Camanachd Association.
Launched in early June, entrants have until Wednesday 5 August to submit their entry for prize money totalling £1500. The competition is to create a new piece of music to commemorate the absence of shinty from the summer sporting calendar. A recording made on a camera or phone should be submitted to Hugh Dan MacLennan on hughdan@btinternet.com, accompanied by a 100 word explanation of the piece. The winner will receive £750, the runner up £500 and the third prize is for £250.
The composition can be in any medium or format, but it must be identifiably Scottish and entrants should be musicians basesd in Scotland. The purpose is to provide some much needed support for traditional musicians at a time when there are almost no earning opportunities from live music.
Entries will be collated after the deadline and considered by a panel of judges from the Royal Celtic Society, the Glasgow Celtic Society and the Camanachd Association, chaired by award winning musician and BBC presenter Gary Innes. The finalists will be announced on 19 August. A high standard of entries has been received, both from amateur and professional musicians.
The grand finale will be held on 19 September 2020, broadcast live online and introduced by HRH The Princess Royal, Patron of the Royal Celtic Society.
